The Elgin Military Museum

The Elgin Military Museum is a private not for profit museum which was created by local veterans from all the services to collect, record, preserve, interpret and exhibit items of military history. The emphasis is on Elgin County and its citizens, and the role they have played in Canadian military history from the founding of the Talbot Settlement to today.

EMM is a local museum only in the strictest sense of the term. The scope is global and includes  Lance Corporal Ellis W. Sifton from Dutton, who won the Victoria Cross at Vimy Ridge; General E.L.M. Burns, who grew up in  St. Thomas and became Commander (1956-59) of the first United Nations Emergency Force,  and Rear Admiral Kenneth J. Summers from St. Thomas who Commanded the Canadian Forces in the Coalition of the Gulf War. Our Patron is Andrew Douglas Alexander Thomas Bruce, 11th Earl of Elgin, 15th Earl of Kincardine, KT, CD

We are a military museum that was formed by ordinary citizens to recognize the contribution of other ordinary citizens who were, like themselves, called upon to meet the extra ordinary circumstances of war and later, the equally challenging keeping the peace.

Now our largest endeavour, Project Ojibwa, is now well into phase two in Port Burwell, Ontario.  HMCS Ojibwa, our Oberon Class submarine, has been thrilling visitors from all over the world for almost ten years.  There is always something new to see as museum staff, retired submariners and volunteers continue to restore this cold war warrior.

Award Winning Attraction

The mystic of a submarine is compelling. It conjures up incredible deeds under arduous conditions. Visitors to HMCS Ojibwa and participants in our education programs leave with an indelible mark on their memory. The experience is all encompassing - everyone tries to imagine themselves living and working under the sea within the confines of this steel tube. It is an experience which has been recognized by two major tourism awards - the Brewster Travel Innovator of the Year Award from the Travel Industry Association of Canada, and the Innovator of the Year Award from the Travel Industry Association of Ontario both for our first year of operation.
