The 80th Anniversary of D-Day
Operation Overlord and Operation Neptune, the naval component that swept the mines away and brought the troops ashore, saw men from St. Thomas and the surrounding area in action on land, sea and air.
D-Day through the eyes of men who survived to become founding members of the Elgin Military Museum. Men who, like their contemporaries, exemplify the courage of ordinary men when faced with extraordinary circumstances.

C Squadron of the Elgin Regiment (25th Canadian Armoured Delivery) which served in the role of the Armoured Tank Delivery Regiment, was under the command of Major F.O. (Bear) Lewis and Included Major D. Charles Raven both later members of the Elgin Military Museum Board. The Elgins were scheduled to bring the reserve tanks for the Division ashore on June 7th but were delayed by bad weather. They made the risky run ashore at 0500 hours on June 8th. The bad weather caused a bit of a traffic jam and Raven recalled with astonishment that when he looked up from his jeep a few hours later, he was surprised to see one of his neighbours from St. Thomas directing the traffic. Other Squadrons followed C into Normandy later in July.
