Cold war at Home

Fallout shelter of an emergency responder

Home for the duration

Picture
With luck, your shelter would have a good game and a favourite book to help while away the time underground and for the girls, their favourite reversible skirt for when they could go back to school.
Our largest Cold War exhibit, the Oberon Class submarine HMCS Ojibwa is located in nearby Port Burwell, nevertheless the Cold War exhibits at the Elgin Military Museum in St. Thomas will engage your attention on a very personal level for some time. There is a lot to see.

For some, the fallout shelter went beyond the fruit cellar or a corner of the basement. There were quite a few backyard heavy duty shelters in St. Thomas and throughout the area most people made some sort of plan even if it didn't extend to cement and ventilation systems.  Everyone was familiar with the fact that any attack on the major cities on the American east coast would result in fallout - at the very least - in southern Ontario. How many believed that lying down and facing the curb if you were caught outside or hiding under your school desk would provide adequate protection is for the social historians to discover.

Our first responder would have to be very familiar with the ramifications of fallout and dress accordingly.
